Cooling Refrigerants of the Future. A refrigerant is a liquid that is stored in your AC coils, which help cool and dehumidify the indoor air. If we didn’t have refrigerants, we wouldn’t have air conditioning. For years, the most common AC refrigerant was R-22 (Freon), but in 2012 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandated the phase-out of R-22 through the Clean Air Act. By 2020, R-22 will no longer be legal to produce as a result of its negative effects on the environment. Introducing R-410A To decrease environmental impacts, all Lennox® products are now engineered to work with the new R-410A AC refrigerant. R-410A is EPA-recognized and is free of chlorine, which means it’s ozone-friendly. You can feel at ease using this refrigerant in Dresden because it’ll help make your cooling system operate efficiently, reliably and quietly, and provide the same cool comfort in the warmer months. Additional Considerations If your AC or heat pump was manufactured before 2010, it may not be R-410A-compatible. You probably should investigate upgrading your cooling system before R-22 is totally unavailable. The old refrigerant will become rare in the next few years, costing you more to run your system effectively. The Lennox products we offer at McFadden Heating & Cooling work with R-410A, so you know we have an AC or heat pump that better meets your needs. Be sure to avoid”alternate refrigerants that claim to work in R-22 systems. These include R-407C, R-438A and R-422, all of which can actually compromise your system’s performance.
